01/11/2011 A Grundy Banjo There's nothing nicer than having good instruments to play. I've got a good fiddle......two, in fact and I was lucky with both, pricewise (what a tightarse I am). I have a very nice 30 year old Takamine Dreadnought which is an amalgam of D28 and D35 and I have a nice '67 Gibson banjo. I thought I would never need another banjo until I got my hands on one of Laurie Grundy's "Lonnie Hoppers" models and what a sweet sounding thing it is!! The Gibson is a nice banjo, a little ripper, but the Grundy is on another level altogether. Laurie's tone ring and the meeting of that and the neck makes the whole thing sing like a bird. The response is to die for and it felt like my playing improved by 50% when I started to pick it. If you're into banjo and you get to pick a Grundy, do yourself a favour and invest in one......good stuff always has a resale value anyhow if somewhere down the track you find picking bluegrass isn't for you. Check out www.grundybanjos.com Very similar with my guitar........the Takamine is a great axe - big sound and looks good - a lot of people think it's a Martin of course, being a dreadnought with the Martin style headstock, but I have on order a Joe Gallacher guitar - one of his D18 models, mahogany back and sides and Adirondack red spruce top. These guitars have a massive sound that the Tak can't compete with and that's taking nothing away from that guitar. Joe's are as good as any you could want and I can't wait til mine arrives. Life's too short to play second rate instruments. Might as well have the best you can. If you want a big guitar sound and you get one of Joe's D18's, you'll never need another guitar. www.gallacherguitars.com See you later!
17/10/2011 Looking to the Hot Months Ahead Some people have had trouble getting in touch through the website, so if you want to contact me, please try this email address: pjdenahy@yahoo.com.au Right, now to business..........I know you're all busting to know what I've been up to because it's so damned interesting, isn't it? Well, I just mowed the lawn and I took the flowers off the rocket plants to stop them going to seed. I did the same with the coriander. What else have I been up to?..............I'm going through dates and booking gigs and shuffling money and practising my banjo, fiddle and guitar.......all the usual stuff. Was crook as a dog last week and did a show in Wangaratta, but it was so much fun that I didn't feel so bad while I was on stage but as soon as I got off, I felt like curling up and dying. Are you feeling sorry for me yet? No? Oh, well. Did the Melbourne Show and Deniliquin Ute Muster again the year......mostly MCing but I played in the Cattlemen's Bar every night at the Show with Lachie Cossor. They've been my most enjoyable jobs in the last few weeks. I love that time of year...........busy as hell and go go go. Celeste Clabburn from the Sunny Cowgirls was there in our arena at the Show with Ian O'Connell and their fantastic working dogs. Great little team we had down there. Writing songs for my bluegrass album next year and trying to get another comedy one written in time. I have a few tracks for the bluegrass, plus a couple of tunes. Got a bit of recording gear so I'll see what I can do here at 22 High St. Got some gigs in around Perth this coming weekend (Oct 21, 22, 23 ) and then Maldon Folk Festival and on Melbourne Cup Day, I'll be in the joddies, on a horse, leading the jockeys around to the barriers at Albury races. See you soon and all that.
08/07/2011 Something Different G'day, hello, howdy, konnichiwa.........it's still freezing here in old Yackandandah, but life is alway good here! Just come back from a couple of great little gigs - one on the Gold Coast Hinetrland at the home of The Leaping Lizards - thanks, Donna and Ron (theleapinglizards.com) and at Pioneer Village at Petrie, Brisbane. I've just put a new product on my store page.....have a look....for something a little different! Hope you're all keeping well. Cheers from Yack, Pete
21/06/2011 Pete's Plait and Chat Our front verandah is right on the footpath of High St, Yackandandah. We've had some great weather lately......sunny days following frosts and I've been out the front during the week plaiting stockwhips. It's amazing the interest it causes. I've got someone stopped and talking nearly the whole time, and as it's something I can do while still conversing with the onlooker, it works out well for all! Lachie Cossor came up with a good name for it........he calls it Pete's Plait and Chat. On the musical side of things, it's been nice and busy for winter. Outside of the comedy gigs, we are keeping busy playing bluegrass and getting a good lot of songs together. We hope that it won't be too long before we have a little album of bluegrass songs out. Drop me a line, say G'day and have a look about the site.........we're working on it to get it looking the best we can! Cacophonically Thine, Pete
15/04/2011 Guess what I've been cooking? My producers and I have been working tirelessly to get my new DVD 'All You Can Eat' to this point. You can order it on the store page for $20.00 + $3.00p/h
